Intended Audience:

Personnel staffing emergency, intensive care or critical care departments; emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency. This course is based on the new 2005 guidelines.

Please note that this course is 1.5 days in length.

Objectives:

ACLS

  • Provides the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first ten minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) arrest
  • Providers are expected to learn to manage ten core ACLS cases:
    • A respiratory emergency
    • Cardiac arrest: simple VF/VT
    • Cardiac arrest: complex VF/VT
    • Cardiac arrest: PEA
    • Cardiac arrest: asystole
    • Pre-arrest: bradycardia
    • Pre-arrest: stable tachycardia
    • Pre-arrest: unstable tachycardia
    • Pre-arrest: acute coronary syndromes
    • Stroke

BLS

The course contains a series of online modules that cover the required American Heart Association adult, child and infant CPR sequences for BLS for Healthcare Providers:

  • 12 checkpoints that must be covered
  • 20 review sections and 19 videos

After successful completion of the online portion, participants are required to attend a Skills Check, which should take about 30 minutes. The Skills Check will begin one hour prior to the start of the ACLS class.

How It Works:

  1. You complete and submit the ACLS + Online BLS Registration form.
  2. Barton University staff will email you the instructions and an individual login key to access the web-based course.
  3. You will log in using your key and complete the course.
  4. When you are finished with the course, you will print out a course completion certificate.
  5. You will bring your course completion certificate to your Skills Check session.
  6. After successful completion of your Skills Check, Barton University will issue you an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers card, and you will be admitted to the ACLS class.

  • Current BLS certification
  • Computer with Internet Access & Printer
  • Valid Email Address
